מחווה בינלאומית לדניאל ס׳ מריישין: שגרירים ונציגים מכ־40 מדינות השתתפו באירוע הוקרה מיוחד במשרד החוץ
מנהיגים, דיפלומטים ואישי ציבור התכנסו בירושלים כדי להוקיר את מי שהנהיג את בני ברית הבינלאומי במשך 27 שנים והקדיש כחמישה עשורים לחיזוק העם היהודי, להגנת מדינת ישראל ולמאבק באנטישמיות

אירוע ההוקרה לדניאל ס׳ מריישין, שנערך ביום שני, 7 בספטמבר 2026, במשרד החוץ בירושלים, לא היה רק טקס פרידה ממנכ״ל ותיק. במשך כשעתיים נפרשה בו דמותו של אחד הקולות הבולטים בדיפלומטיה היהודית בת־זמננו — אדם שבמשך עשרות שנים נשא את דברם של מדינת ישראל והעם היהודי, נאבק באנטישמיות, טיפח קשרים עם מנהיגים ברחבי העולם וחיזק את הגשר שבין ישראל לבין הקהילות היהודיות בתפוצות.

את האירוע יזם וארגן ד״ר אילן שחורי, סגן נשיא בכיר של בני ברית הבינלאומי וידידו האישי של מריישין. זאת יחד עם אלן שניידר, מנכ"ל המרכז העולמי של ארגון בני ברית בירושלים. האירוע התקיים בשיתוף בני ברית הבינלאומי ומשרד החוץ, ובהיענותו של שר החוץ גדעון סער לבקשתו של ד״ר שחורי לקיים את המעמד החגיגי במשרד החוץ בירושלים. באירוע השתתפו מנכ״ל משרד החוץ, בכירי המשרד, מנהיגי בני ברית, אנשי אקדמיה, אישי ציבור, ידידים ובני משפחתו של דן. בלטה במיוחד נוכחותם של שגרירים ונציגים דיפלומטיים מטעם כ־40 מדינות — היקף השתתפות יוצא דופן, הנחשב למחזה נדיר אפילו באירועים רשמיים הנערכים במשרד החוץ.
הייצוג הדיפלומטי הרחב העניק לאירוע ממד בינלאומי מרשים והיה ביטוי מוחשי להערכה הרבה שדן מריישין זוכה לה בקרב מדינות, ממשלות ודיפלומטים ברחבי העולם. נציגיהן של מדינות בעלות רקע תרבותי ומדיני שונה התכנסו בירושלים כדי לחלוק כבוד לאדם שעמו פעלו במשך שנים ושאותו הכירו כשותף אמין, כדיפלומט יהודי מוערך וכמגן עקבי של מדינת ישראל ושל הקהילות היהודיות. נוכחות כה רחבה לא הייתה עניין טקסי בלבד. היא המחישה את עוצמתם של הקשרים האישיים והמדיניים שטיפח דן במשך עשרות שנות פעילותו ואת יכולתו הנדירה לבנות גשרים, ליצור אמון ולגייס ידידים ושותפים למען ישראל, העם היהודי והמאבק באנטישמיות. האירוע, שהועבר בשידור חי לקהלים בכ־50 מדינות, הפך בכך ממעמד הוקרה אישי לאירוע יהודי־דיפלומטי בעל משמעות בינלאומית. את הערב הנחתה לידר גרוה־לזי, אשר שילבה בין דברי הדוברים, הקטעים המוזיקליים והצגת התחנות המרכזיות בדרכו הציבורית של דן. היא תיארה את האירוע כציון דרך בין תקופת הנהגה יוצאת דופן לבין פרק חדש בחייו של אדם שהקדיש את עצמו לעם היהודי ולמדינת ישראל.
הפתיחה המוזיקלית
הזמרת הילה בן־דוד והמוזיקאי שי ברק פתחו את התוכנית בשיר „שבט אחים ואחיות”. בחירת השיר ביטאה את ערכי האחווה, האחדות, האחריות ההדדית והסובלנות המזוהים עם בני ברית הבינלאומי ועם פעילותו של דן. בהמשך הערב ביצעו השניים גם את „גן השקמים”, „תן לשמש לעבור עליי” ואת “A Million Dreams”. השיר האחרון הוקדש ליכולתו של דן לחלום בגדול, אך גם להפוך חזון לעבודה מדינית, ציבורית ויהודית מעשית. את התוכנית חתמה גרסה מיוחדת ומרגשת ל„הללויה” של לאונרד כהן, ששולבה בה קריאה מתהילים ק״נ. לאחר מכן שר הקהל את „התקווה”.
השגריר נאור גילאון: מן הדוגמאות הגדולות ביותר לדיפלומטיה יהודית
השגריר נאור גילאון, ראש המערך לדיפלומטיה ציבורית במשרד החוץ, סיפר כי הוא מכיר את דן מאז אמצע שנות התשעים, מתקופת עבודתו לצד ראשי הממשלה יצחק רבין, שמעון פרס ובנימין נתניהו, ובהמשך מתקופות שירותו בניו יורק ובוושינגטון גילאון הדגיש כי אנשי משרד החוץ רואים בעבודתם שליחות, וכי גם דן התייחס לעבודתו בבני ברית כאל שליחות מטעם העם היהודי ומדינת ישראל. הוא תיאר אותו כאחת הדוגמאות המובהקות ביותר ל„דיפלומטיה יהודית” וכאחד הדיפלומטים היהודים הבולטים בדורנו. לדבריו, דן שמר על השפעתה הבינלאומית של בני ברית ואף הרחיב אותה. הוא יצר קשרים עם מנהיגים, מקבלי החלטות ודיפלומטים והפך את הארגון ל„גשר חי” בין מדינת ישראל, הקהילות היהודיות והעולם.
גילאון הזכיר את מאבקו המתמשך של דן באנטישמיות, את פעילותו למען צדק היסטורי והשבת רכוש יהודי מתקופת השואה ואת יכולתו לבנות קואליציות ולגייס שותפים למטרות יהודיות וישראליות. הוא העריך כי סיום כהונתו של דן כמנכ״ל אינו מסמן פרישה מהחיים הציבוריים, אלא מעבר ל„פרק השני” של פעילותו. לדבריו, כבר עתה ברור שדן ימשיך להיות מעורב ביוזמות מדיניות וציבוריות ולא יסתפק במנוחה בבית.
ד״ר חיים כץ: שילוב נדיר של דיפלומטיה שקטה וקול ציבורי אמיץ
ד״ר חיים כץ, יו״ר המרכז העולמי של בני ברית בירושלים, פתח בדברי הערכה למיכל מריישין. הוא הדגיש את החום, החיוביות והתמיכה שהעניקה לדן לאורך שנות פעילותו, ברוח האמירה שמאחורי כל אדם גדול עומדת שותפה גדולה לדרך. כץ אמר כי עצם קיומו של הטקס במשרד החוץ, בהשתתפות שגרירים ונציגים מדיניים רבים כל כך, הוא עדות להצלחתו של דן בהגנה על ישראל ועל העם היהודי ולהערכה הבינלאומית הרבה שלה זכה. לדבריו, אחת מיכולותיו החשובות ביותר של דן הייתה לדעת מתי יש לפעול באמצעות דיפלומטיה שקטה ואישית, תוך הישענות על קשרים ואמון שנבנו במשך שנים, ומתי יש לצאת בפומבי ולהשמיע קול נחרץ וברור. דן ידע לדבר אמת באוזני בעלי כוח, אך עשה זאת מתוך אחריות, שיקול דעת והיכרות עמוקה עם הזירה המדינית.
כץ תיאר את תחושת האובדן האישית שחש כאשר שמע על סיום כהונתו של דן, אך ציין כי מורשתו כבר משפיעה גם על הדור הצעיר. הוא הזכיר את פעילותו של מריישין במסגרת משלחות אמריקניות לכנסים בינלאומיים נגד אנטישמיות ואת מעורבותו, מאז 2006, במשא ומתן להשבת רכוש יהודי באמצעות הארגון היהודי העולמי להשבת רכוש. עוד הודגש חלקו בקידום זיכרון השואה וחינוך בנושא השואה ברומניה, בסלובקיה, בליטא ובמדינות נוספות, וכן תמיכתו במיזם המרכז העולמי להוקרת יהודים שהצילו יהודים בתקופת השואה. כץ סיכם כי דן מייצג ניסיון, יושרה, חוכמה ואחריות, והביע ביטחון שקולו הייחודי ימשיך להישמע גם במסגרת פעילותו החדשה.
שגריר רומניה ראדו יואניד: דן ידע לזהות התקדמות — אך גם להתריע מפני נסיגה
שגריר רומניה בישראל, ד״ר ראדו יואניד, סיפר כי פגש את דן לראשונה בשנים 1994–1995, כאשר עבד במוזיאון ארצות הברית לזכר השואה בוושינגטון. מאז פעלו השניים יחד במדינות רבות באירופה — לעיתים בגלוי ולעיתים מאחורי הקלעים. יואניד שיבח את הידע יוצא הדופן של דן ואת ניסיונו במאבק באנטישמיות ובהכחשת השואה. הוא ציין במיוחד את יכולתו לזהות לא רק הצלחות והתקדמות, אלא גם רגעים שבהם מדינות מתחילות לסגת מן ההישגים שהושגו בנושא זיכרון השואה והמאבק באנטישמיות.
השגריר סיפר בחיוך כי דן התייעץ עמו פעם אם לקבל אות כבוד ממדינה מסוימת. תשובתו הייתה: „קח אותו — כדי שיהיה לך מה להחזיר אם יהיה צורך”. האנקדוטה המחישה את הידידות, את ההומור המשותף ואת ההיכרות ארוכת השנים ביניהם. חלק מרכזי בדבריו הוקדש לוועדה הבינלאומית לחקר השואה ברומניה, בראשות אלי ויזל, שבה היה דן חבר. יואניד אמר כי עבודת הוועדה חוללה שינוי עמוק ביחסה של רומניה לעברה וכי מרבית המלצותיה יושמו. לדבריו, דן היה שותף משמעותי לתהליך ההיסטורי הזה.
שגרירת יוון מאיה סולומו: מסע ארוך ברוח אודיסאוס ואיתקה
שגרירת יוון בישראל, מאיה סולומו, בחרה לתאר את דרכו של דן באמצעות דימויים מן ה„אודיסיאה”. היא דיברה על מסע בן 37 שנים בבני ברית, כחלק מיותר מחמישה עשורים של פעילות למען העם היהודי. לדבריה, גם כאשר ניצבו בדרכו „קיקלופים ומפלצות”, הוא המשיך במסעו בנחישות, מתוך שאיפה להגיע לאיתקה. סולומו התמקדה בתרומתו לקשרים שבין הקהילות היהודיות וההלניות בארצות הברית. היא הזכירה את מעורבותו בטיפוח היחסים בין בני ברית לבין ארגונים מרכזיים של התפוצה היוונית ואת תמיכתו בשיתוף הפעולה המשולש בין ישראל, יוון וקפריסין, בשותפות עם ארצות הברית. עוד ציינה את תמיכתו בפורום ישראל–יוון, במשלחות משותפות ובקורס אקדמי שנלמד ביוון, בישראל ובקפריסין בנושא היחסים הדיפלומטיים בין המדינות. היא הזכירה גם את הקשר המתמשך של בני ברית עם הלשכה הוותיקה באתונה ואת אות ההוקרה שקיבל דן בשנת 2026 מארגון AHEPA.
השגרירה הביעה ביטחון כי דן ימשיך לעסוק במאבק באנטישמיות, בהגנה על הקהילות היהודיות, בחיזוק קשרי התפוצות ובהדרכת הדור הבא. בני ברית, אמרה, היה נמל חשוב במסעו — אך נמלים חדשים עדיין ממתינים לו.
מסר מצולם מהשגריר רון פרושאור
שגריר ישראל בגרמניה, רון פרושאור, שלח ברכה מצולמת. הוא אמר כי קרוב לארבעים שנות פעילותו של דן בבני ברית התאפיינו בבהירות מטרה: חיזוק הקהילה היהודית, חיזוק מדינת ישראל והבטחת חיים יהודיים בטוחים. פרושאור, שהכיר את דן מתקופת שירותו בוושינגטון, סיפר כי ראה מקרוב את התשוקה, היושרה והמחויבות שבהן פעל. לדבריו, דן הגן על ישראל באולמות האו״ם ובבירות העולם, התעמת עם גילויי אנטישמיות ופעל להפיכת זיכרון השואה ממושג מופשט למחויבות מעשית כלפי הניצולים ובני משפחותיהם.
הוא הזכיר גם את הסיוע בהשבת ספרי תורה מקהילות שנחרבו בליטא לישראל ולקהילות יהודיות. פרושאור הודה לדן על ידידותו, אומץ לבו ושנות שירותו הארוכות.
מכתבו של השגריר דניאל מירון
במהלך האירוע הוקרא מכתב מהשגריר דניאל מירון, נציג ישראל באו״ם ובארגונים הבינלאומיים בז׳נבה. מירון הביע הערכה עמוקה לחמישה עשורים של הגנה על ישראל ועל העם היהודי וסיכם את דמותו של דן במילה אחת, בעלת משמעות עמוקה: „מענטש” — אדם ישר, הגון ובעל מידות.
פרופ׳ חבצלת יהל: מן הספרייה הלאומית ועד למאבק בקמפוסים
פרופ׳ חבצלת יהל, ממכון בן־גוריון לחקר ישראל והציונות באוניברסיטת בן־גוריון בנגב, הציגה את השותפות האקדמית החדשה בין האוניברסיטה לבין בני ברית הבינלאומי. היא סיפרה על מפגש אישי עם דן ומיכל בביתה, שבו שוחחו על העם היהודי ועל מדינת ישראל. באותה שיחה זיהתה, לדבריה, אדם נדיר הנושא את שני הנושאים הללו לא רק כתחומי עיסוק, אלא כשליחות אישית. יהל הציגה את הקשרים ההיסטוריים העמוקים בין בני ברית לבין המפעל הציוני ובניין הארץ. היא הזכירה את לשכת ירושלים, שהוקמה בשנת 1888; את הספרייה שהקים הארגון בשנת 1892 והייתה לימים בסיס להתפתחות הספרייה הלאומית; ואת פעילותם של אישים כמו אליעזר בן־יהודה, דוד ילין, חיים נחמן ביאליק, מאיר דיזנגוף ושמעון רוקח.
היא הזכירה גם את מעורבותה של הנהגת בני ברית במאמצים המדיניים להקמת מדינה יהודית בשנים 1947–1948, את חלקו של הארגון בתיווך הפגישה בין נשיא ארצות הברית הארי טרומן לחיים ויצמן לקראת ההכרה האמריקנית במדינת ישראל ואת תרומתם של מנהיגי בני ברית למפעל הציוני. בהתייחסה למציאות הנוכחית אמרה יהל כי לאחר 7 באוקטובר עבר חלק מרכזי מן הלחץ האנטי־ישראלי אל הקמפוסים ואל אולמות ההרצאות. לדבריה, המאבק נגד אנטישמיות ודה־לגיטימציה מחייב שילוב בין עבודה דיפלומטית וציבורית לבין מחקר אקדמי מדויק. דן האמין תמיד שהסברה יעילה חייבת להתבסס על עובדות, ואילו מכוני המחקר יכולים לספק את הידע, המשמעת המחקרית והכלים הדרושים לכך. על המחקר, הדגישה, להגיע לא רק אל כתבי העת האקדמיים, אלא גם למקבלי ההחלטות, למורים, למחנכים ולאחראים על הנעשה בקמפוסים.
יהל הודיעה כי בעקבות מאמציו המתמשכים של ד״ר אילן שחורי נוצרה שותפות אקדמית קבועה בין בני ברית הבינלאומי, מכון בן־גוריון לחקר ישראל והציונות והמכון למנהיגות ולמדיניות ציבורית על שם דניאל ס׳ מריישין. הכנס המשותף הראשון יתקיים בדצמבר 2026 בקמפוס שדה בוקר ויעסוק בפעילותם של ארגונים יהודיים בישראל ובעולם בעת משבר, באנטישמיות, באנטי־ציונות, בדה־לגיטימציה של מדינת ישראל ובשאלת שורשיו הילידיים של העם היהודי בארץ ישראל. פרופ׳ יהל הודתה לדן על חיים שלמים שהקדיש לעם היהודי ולמדינת ישראל והביעה את גאוות האוניברסיטה והמכון על הזכות ללוות אותו בפרק החדש של פעילותו.
ד״ר אילן שחורי: „תפקיד רשמי יכול להסתיים — שליחות אמיתית לעולם אינה מסתיימת”
ד״ר אילן שחורי, סגן נשיא בכיר של בני ברית הבינלאומי, יוזם האירוע ומארגנו, הקדיש את דבריו לקשר האישי והמיוחד שנרקם בינו לבין דן מריישין במהלך העשור האחרון. שחורי סיפר כי השניים הכירו במסגרת פעילותם בבני ברית הבינלאומי וכי במהלך השנים התפתחו ביניהם יחסים עמוקים המבוססים על אמון, הערכה הדדית ואהבה משותפת לבני ברית, לעם היהודי ולמדינת ישראל.
באמצעות דן הכיר שחורי גם אתרעייתו מיכל ואת סיפורה המשפחתי המיוחד. הקשר קיבל ממד אישי נוסף כאשר התברר כי אחותה של מיכל נשואה לפרופ׳ רוברט רוקאווי, שהיה אחד המרצים האהובים על שחורי בתקופת לימודיו באוניברסיטת תל אביב וחוקר חשוב של ההיסטוריה היהודית בארצות הברית. שחורי תיאר את השיחות הרבות שניהל עם דן לאורך השנים בענייני בני ברית, מדינת ישראל, העולם היהודי והאתגרים הניצבים בפני הקהילות היהודיות ברחבי העולם. לדבריו, בשיחות אלה נחשפו שוב ושוב ניסיונו העצום של דן, חוכמתו המדינית, מסירותו ותחושת השליחות העמוקה שהנחתה אותו. לדברי שחורי, דן מריישין יקר לא רק לבני ברית הבינלאומי, אלא גם לקהילות יהודיות רבות ברחבי העולם ולמדינת ישראל. לאורך עשרות שנות פעילותו נשא עמו את ערכי האחווה, האחדות, הצדק, האחריות המשותפת וכבוד האדם. דן נפגש במסגרת תפקידיו עם נשיאים, ראשי ממשלה, שרי חוץ, שגרירים ודיפלומטים. ואולם, כפי שהדגיש שחורי, הכבוד הרב שרחשו לו ברחבי העולם לא נבע רק מן התפקיד הבכיר שמילא, אלא בראש ובראשונה מאישיותו, מיושרו ומאיכות מנהיגותו.
שחורי עמד על תרומתו הגדולה של דן למאבק באנטישמיות, להגנה על זכויות האדם ועל ביטחונן של הקהילות היהודיות, לחיזוק קשריה הבינלאומיים של מדינת ישראל ולשמירת מעמדה של בני ברית כקול יהודי מרכזי ומשפיע בזירה העולמית. לצד הישגיו המדיניים והציבוריים, הדגיש שחורי כי גדולתו של דן ניכרת גם בדרך שבה התייחס לאנשים: בכבוד, בסבלנות, בחום, בענווה ובנכונות אמיתית להקשיב. לצד היותו מנהיג יהודי בינלאומי, דן היה ונשאר חבר נגיש, שותף נאמן ואדם שניתן לבטוח בו. שחורי הביע גאווה והתרגשות על הזכות ליזום ולארגן את האירוע במשרד החוץ — המקום הראוי ביותר להוקיר אדם שהקדיש את חייו לחיזוק מעמדה הבינלאומי של ישראל ולהגנת העם היהודי. את דבריו סיכם במשפט שביטא את רוחו של הערב כולו: „תפקיד רשמי יכול להגיע לסיומו, אך שליחות אמיתית לעולם אינה מסתיימת”. שחורי הודה גם למיכל מריישין על השנים הרבות שבהן עמדה לצדו של דן, תמכה בו ואפשרה לו להעניק כה רבות לבני ברית, לעם היהודי ולמדינת ישראל.
מנכ״ל משרד החוץ עדן בר־טל: העם היהודי נמצא ברגע היסטורי מכריע
מנכ״ל משרד החוץ, עדן בר־טל, נשא את הנאום המרכזי באירוע. בראשית דבריו שיבח את בני ברית כארגון בינלאומי ותיק ומרשים, המאגד יותר ממאה אלף חברים בעשרות מדינות ופועל למען העם היהודי, ישראל, כבוד האדם, צדק וסובלנות. הוא ציין כי דן הקדיש כחמישה עשורים לשירות העם היהודי, מהם 27 שנים כמנכ״ל בני ברית. בתקופה זו הפך לאיש קשר מהימן של מנהיגים ומקבלי החלטות רבים. קשריו האסטרטגיים סייעו ליהודים ולמדינת ישראל, והוא היה שותף קרוב של משרד החוץ בסוגיות רבות: יחסי ישראל–ארצות הברית, פעילות באמריקה הלטינית, חיזוק הברית בין ישראל, יוון וקפריסין, השבת רכוש יהודי והמאבק בזירה הבינלאומית.
בר־טל הרחיב על מצבו של העולם המערבי ועל האתגרים העומדים בפני ישראל והעם היהודי. לדבריו, העולם מצוי בתקופה בעלת משמעות היסטורית, שבה מתנהל מאבק רחב נגד הציוויליזציה המערבית. הוא התריע מפני הקצנה, קיטוב והיחלשות המרכז הפוליטי באירופה ומפני הברית הנוצרת בין השמאל הרדיקלי לבין האסלאם הקיצוני. לדבריו, האנטישמיות והמאבק נגד ישראל אינם תופעות מבודדות, אלא חלק ממערכה רחבה יותר נגד המערב. הוא הצביע על השקעות שיטתיות באקדמיה, בתרבות, בתקשורת ובמערכות הפוליטיות במטרה להשפיע על דעת הקהל ולהפיץ מידע כוזב נגד ישראל והעם היהודי. בר־טל אמר כי העם היהודי מתמודד עם אחת התקופות המאתגרות ביותר מאז שנות השלושים והארבעים של המאה הקודמת. הוא קרא להביט „מבעד לחלון ולא רק במראה” — כלומר, לבחון את המציאות כפי שהיא ולא כפי שהיינו רוצים שתהיה. הוא מתח ביקורת על מדינות באירופה השוקלות צעדי חרם, סנקציות והגבלות על ישראל בעת שהיא נלחמת באיראן, בחמאס, בחיזבאללה ובחות׳ים. לדבריו, ידידות אמיתית נבחנת בזמן מלחמה. עם זאת, הדגיש כי ישראל אינה בודדה. היא מטפחת שותפויות חדשות במזרח הרחוק, בהודו, במדינות המפרץ, ביוון, בקפריסין, באפריקה, באמריקה הלטינית, באיים הקריביים ובאזור האוקיינוס השקט. יכולותיה בתחומי הביטחון, הטכנולוגיה, הבינה המלאכותית, האנרגיה, המחקר והפיתוח הופכות אותה לנכס חשוב עבור שותפותיה.
בר־טל דיבר גם בנימה אישית על שני ילדיו התאומים, בן ובת, ששירתו בעזה. הוא תיאר את הקושי של הורה שילדיו יוצאים להגן עליו, אך הדגיש כי ישראל לעולם לא תוותר על זכותה ועל יכולתה להגן על עצמה. הוא קרא לשינוי אסטרטגי באופן שבו ישראל מנהלת את קשריה בעולם: מעבר מתלות לשותפות המבוססת על נכסים וערך הדדי; משיתופי פעולה מוגבלים לבריתות עמוקות; ומתפיסה מקומית לתפיסה גלובלית רחבה. בר־טל סיים בקריאה לאחדות יהודית, לגאווה, לערנות ולסיוע הדדי והודה לבני ברית ולדן על עשרות שנים של פעילות.

דן פתח את דבריו בהתרגשות רבה ואמר כי הוא מרגיש בבית בבניין משרד החוץ. הוא הודה לשר החוץ גדעון סער, למנכ״ל משרד החוץ עדן בר־טל, לאנשי המשרד, לדוברים ולמשתתפים. הוא הודה במיוחד לד״ר אילן שחורי על היוזמה ועל ארגון האירוע ולאלן שניידר, מנהל המרכז העולמי של בני ברית בירושלים, שעמו עבד בצמוד במשך 37 שנים. הוא הודה גם לנשיא הכבוד של בני ברית ריצ׳רד היידמן, לדיפלומטים, לעמיתיו, לידידיו ולבני משפחתו. דן סיפר ששתי אחיותיו, סנדרה וסינתיה, חונכו על ציונות סביב שולחן המשפחה ו„לקחו אותה ברצינות” כאשר עלו לישראל. הוא הקדיש דברים מרגשים למיכל וציין כי בדצמבר יחגגו חמישים שנות נישואים.
בחיוך תיאר את נישואיהם כמפגש יהודי בין בן למשפחה אשכנזית לבין בת למשפחה בוכרית־בגדדית, שנולדה במומבאי ועלתה לישראל בגיל ארבע. לדבריו, לא היה מצליח למלא את תפקידיו ללא אהבתה, עצותיה ותמיכתה. בהמשך סקר דן את מסלול חייו המקצועי. הוא החל בשנת 1973 במועצה ליחסי קהילה יהודית ולאחר מכן בפדרציה הציונית האמריקנית בבוסטון. הוא הזכיר את קשריו הראשונים עם דיפלומטים ישראלים ובהם קולט אביטל ואת האירועים שאירגן לציון עשור לאיחוד ירושלים. בשנת 1977 עבר לניו יורק והחל לעבוד בליגה נגד השמצה. הוא סיפר על קשריו עם שגריר ישראל באו״ם חיים הרצוג ועם דיפלומטים ישראלים רבים. בשנת 1986 עבר לוושינגטון ועבד באיפא״ק, ובהמשך שימש דובר במסע הבחירות לנשיאות של מזכיר המדינה לשעבר אלכסנדר הייג. את התקופה הזאת תיאר כמעין שנת לימודים מעשית ביחסי החוץ המודרניים של ארצות הברית. בשנת 1988 הצטרף לבני ברית. מאז עבד עם כל שגרירי ישראל בוושינגטון, החל במאיר רוזן, ועסק בשורה ארוכה של נושאים: יחסי ארצות הברית–ישראל, ההטיה נגד ישראל באו״ם, יהדות ברית המועצות, סוריה ואתיופיה, טרור, מלחמות והפסקות אש, מדיניות הממשל והקונגרס, נפילת הקומוניזם וברית המועצות, הסכמי אברהם, תנועת החרם והמאבק באנטישמיות.
השורשים הציוניים במשפחתו
דן הקדיש חלק משמעותי מדבריו לשורשיו הציוניים. הוא סיפר על אמו רוז ועל קרובי משפחתה שעלו מליטא לארץ ישראל בשנת 1934. בבית המשפחה הוצגה בגאווה תמונת קרובי המשפחה בארץ, ואמו נהגה לקרוא את מכתביהם. הוא סיפר על המחיר הכבד ששילמה המשפחה: בן משפחה שנפל ברמת הגולן במלחמת יום הכיפורים; שלמה, שנהרג בהתרסקות מטוס צבאי בסיני; ושגיא דקל־חן מקיבוץ ניר עוז, שנחטף ב־7 באוקטובר והוחזק בידי חמאס במשך 498 ימים. אביו, שאול, היגר מרוסיה הצארית. בביתו הייתה תלויה תמונתו של בנימין זאב הרצל. לפני שעזב בשנת 1913 נפרד מחברו, והשניים הבטיחו להיפגש מחדש בארץ ישראל. הסיפור הזה, אמר דן, החדיר בו מילדות את המשיכה העמוקה לרעיון השחרור הלאומי היהודי.
מורשת בני ברית ומדינת ישראל
דן סקר את מקומה של בני ברית בתולדות הציונות ומדינת ישראל. הוא הזכיר את הקמת לשכת ירושלים בשנת 1888, את פעילותם של אליעזר בן־יהודה, דוד ילין, חיים נחמן ביאליק, מאיר דיזנגוף ושמעון רוקח ואת הספרייה שייסד הארגון ושממנה התפתחה הספרייה הלאומית. הוא הזכיר כי חיים ויצמן היה סגן נשיא לשכת בני ברית במנצ׳סטר ופעל לקידום הצהרת בלפור. עוד ציין את חלקה של בני ברית בתיווך הפגישה בין הנשיא הארי טרומן לחיים ויצמן, שתרמה להכרה האמריקנית בישראל, ואת תרומתו של נשיא בני ברית לשעבר פיליפ קלוצניק לפיתוח אשדוד המודרנית.
דן תיאר את אנשי משרד החוץ כשותפים מקצועיים, מורים, מדריכים, ידידים ובעלי ברית במאבק להבטחת מקומה של ישראל בעולם שלעיתים קרובות גילה כלפיה עוינות או אדישות.
„לא סערה מושלמת — אלא צונאמי של שנאה”
לקראת סיום דבריו התריע דן כי העולם היהודי אינו עומד רק מול „סערה מושלמת”, אלא מול „צונאמי של שנאה”. לדבריו, דימויים אנטישמיים שבעבר נחשבו בלתי מקובלים נעשו שגורים, והרשתות החברתיות הפכו למפעל הפועל ללא הפסקה להפצת מידע כוזב, שקרים ועלילות דם. הוא מתח ביקורת על אוניברסיטאות שנטשו את הסטודנטים היהודים ועל פוליטיקאים המוכנים להשלים עם הסתה כדי לשמור על כוחם. לנוכח המציאות הזאת קרא לטפח בעלי ברית, לגבש פתרונות ובעיקר לשקם את האחדות וההסכמה בתוך העולם היהודי. לדבריו, אם הקהילות היהודיות יהיו חלשות ומפולגות מבפנים, הן יתקשו להתמודד עם האיומים מבחוץ. דן סיים בהבעת תודה עמוקה לכל המשתתפים ואמר כי יישאר אסיר תודה על ההוקרה, הידידות והשותפות.
מכתב מראש הממשלה בנימין נתניהו
לאחר דבריו של דן עלה אלן שניידר והקריא מכתב מראש הממשלה בנימין נתניהו. ראש הממשלה כתב כי לאחר שנים רבות של ידידות הוא שמח להצטרף להוקרה על שירותו יוצא הדופן של דן. לדבריו, במשך קרוב לארבעה עשורים בבני ברית, ובהם 27 שנים כמנכ״ל, הביא דן את עניינו של העם היהודי לארמונות נשיאותיים, למשרדי חוץ ולמרכזי קבלת החלטות ברחבי העולם. נתניהו הזכיר כי דן נפגש עם ראשי מדינות וממשלות, שרי חוץ ושלושה אפיפיורים. הוא תיאר אותו כקול יציב ומוערך שנאבק באנטישמיות, הגן על ישראל מפני אפליה במוסדות הבינלאומיים וחיזק את קשריה עם ידידותיה.
ראש הממשלה הדגיש כי גם לאחר סיום כהונתו, בתפקידו כמנכ״ל של כבוד וכיועץ בכיר, מחויבותו של דן תמשיך להיות איתנה. הוא ורעייתו שרה איחלו לדן בריאות, אושר והגשמה בפרק החדש בחייו.
סיום האירוע
בסיום הערב הודתה מנחת האירוע, לידר גרוה־לזי, לצוות שעסק בהכנתו ובהפקתו, ובראשו ד״ר אילן שחורי, שיזם וארגן את האירוע, ואלן שניידר, מנהל המרכז העולמי של בני ברית בירושלים. תודה הובעה גם לאתי פרדה, אנדריאה קיור, נטלי דון, מרדכי גורדון ולאנשי משרד החוץ ובני ברית שסייעו בארגון ובצדדים המקצועיים והטכניים. תודה מיוחדת הוענקה לזמרת הילה בן־דוד ולמוזיקאי שי ברק על התוכנית המוזיקלית שהעניקה לערב ממד אישי ומרגש.
ד״ר שחורי הודה ללידר גרוה־לזי על הנחיית הערב במקצועיות, בחום ובחן, וכן לכל השותפים שסייעו להפוך את היוזמה למציאות ולמעמד בינלאומי מכובד ומרגש. לאחר שירת „התקווה” הוזמנו האורחים להמשיך למפגש בלתי אמצעי ולקינוח באטריום של משרד החוץ.
מורשת הנמשכת אל העתיד
מן הנאומים שנישאו לאורך הערב הצטייר דן מריישין כאחד מנציגיה הבולטים ביותר של הדיפלומטיה היהודית בעשרות השנים האחרונות. כוחו נבע משילוב נדיר בין ידע היסטורי ומדיני, קשרים בינלאומיים, יושרה אישית, מתינות, אומץ ויכולת לדבר אמת באוזני מקבלי החלטות. תרומתו חרגה הרחק מעבר לפעילותו בבני ברית. היא כללה את חיזוק מדינת ישראל, המאבק באנטישמיות, השבת רכוש יהודי, שימור זיכרון השואה, הגנה על קהילות יהודיות ובניית קשרים ארוכי טווח עם ממשלות ועם נציגים דיפלומטיים ברחבי העולם.
לצד הישגיו המדיניים, כמעט כל הדוברים הדגישו את אנושיותו, צניעותו, החום שהקרין ואת יחסו המכבד לכל אדם. מיכל מריישין הוצגה כשותפה מרכזית לדרכו וכמי שתמיכתה אפשרה את פעילותו הבינלאומית ארוכת השנים. סיום כהונתו אינו נתפס כסיום השליחות, אלא כפתיחת פרק חדש שבו יוסיף דן לפעול, לייעץ, לכתוב, ללמד ולהדריך את הדור הבא. גם השותפות האקדמית החדשה עם אוניברסיטת בן־גוריון והמכון למנהיגות ולמדיניות ציבורית הנושא את שמו מעניקה להמשך דרכו ביטוי מחקרי ומוסדי. האירוע התקיים על רקע עלייה חריפה באנטישמיות ובעוינות כלפי ישראל. משום כך הוצגה מורשתו של דן לא רק כסיכום של העבר, אלא גם כמקור השראה והכוונה להמשך הפעילות בעתיד. הנוכחות חסרת התקדים כמעט של שגרירים ונציגים דיפלומטיים מכ־40 מדינות המחישה יותר מכל כי פועלו של דן מריישין חצה גבולות, יבשות ותרבויות. הייתה זו הבעת הוקרה בינלאומית רחבה לאדם שבמשך עשרות שנים ידע ליצור אמון, לגשר בין עמדות ולרתום מנהיגים ומדינות להגנת ישראל והעם היהודי.
האירוע נחתם בתחושה ברורה כי כהונתו של דניאל ס׳ מריישין כמנכ״ל בני ברית הבינלאומי אמנם הגיעה לסיומה, אך דרכו הציבורית ושליחותו למען ישראל והעם היהודי רחוקות מסיום. מורשתו, ניסיונו, קשריו הבינלאומיים ומחויבותו העמוקה ימשיכו ללוות את בני ברית הבינלאומי ואת פעילותו ברחבי העולם עוד שנים רבות.

Ceremony at Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Jewish leaders, diplomats and public figures gathered to honor a lifetime of service to the Jewish people, the State of Israel and the global fight against antisemitism.

The special tribute honoring Daniel S. Mariaschin, held on Monday, September 7, 2026, at Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem, was far more than a farewell ceremony for a distinguished longtime CEO. Over the course of two moving hours, the event portrayed one of the most influential figures in modern Jewish diplomacy - a man who has spent decades representing Israel and the Jewish people, combating antisemitism, building relationships with world leaders and strengthening the bond between Israel and Jewish communities throughout the Diaspora.
The event was initiated and organized by Dr. Ilan Shchori, Senior Vice President of B'nai B'rith International and a close personal friend of Mariaschin. It was held in cooperation with B'nai B'rith International and Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar's positive response to Dr. Shchori's request to host the tribute at the Ministry in Jerusalem.
The ceremony was attended by the Director General and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, B'nai B'rith leaders, academics, public figures, friends and members of Dan's family. Particularly impressive was the presence of ambassadors and diplomatic representatives from nearly 40 countries - an exceptional level of diplomatic participation rarely seen even at official events held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This broad diplomatic representation gave the ceremony an impressive international character and provided a powerful expression of the respect Dan has earned among governments, countries and diplomats around the world. Representatives of nations with different political, cultural and historical backgrounds came together in Jerusalem to honor a man with whom many had worked over the years and whom they had come to know as a trusted partner, a highly respected Jewish diplomat and a consistent defender of Israel and Jewish communities.
Their participation was far more than ceremonial. It demonstrated the strength of the personal and diplomatic relationships Dan cultivated over many decades, as well as his remarkable ability to build bridges, establish trust and bring together friends and partners in support of Israel, the Jewish people and the global fight against antisemitism.
The ceremony, broadcast live to audiences in approximately 50 countries, thus became much more than a personal tribute. It was an international Jewish and diplomatic event of considerable significance.
The evening was emceed by Leader Grava-Lezi, who skillfully guided the audience through the speeches, musical performances and major milestones in Dan's public career. She described the ceremony as a moment marking both the conclusion of an extraordinary period of leadership and the beginning of a new chapter in the life of a man who has devoted himself to the Jewish people and the State of Israel.
Singer Hila Ben-David and musician Shay Barak opened the program with “Shevet Achim Ve'Achayot” (“A Tribe of Brothers and Sisters”). The song reflected the values of unity, brotherhood, mutual responsibility and tolerance that stand at the heart of B'nai B'rith International and have guided Dan throughout his career.
Later in the evening, they also performed “Gan HaShikmim” (“The Sycamore Garden”), “Let the Sun Pass Over Me” and “A Million Dreams.” The latter was dedicated to Dan's ability not only to dream on a grand scale, but also to turn vision into practical diplomatic, public and Jewish action.
The musical program concluded with a special and deeply moving version of Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah,” incorporating words from Psalm 150. The audience then joined in singing “Hatikvah,” Israel's national anthem.
Ambassador Naor Gilon, Head of the Public Diplomacy Directorate at Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, recalled that he had known Dan since the mid-1990s, during the administrations of Prime Ministers Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres and Benjamin Netanyahu, and later through his diplomatic service in New York and Washington.
Gilon emphasized that members of Israel's foreign service regard their work as a mission. Dan, he said, approached his work at B'nai B'rith with the same sense of calling on behalf of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. He described Dan as one of the finest examples of Jewish diplomacy and one of the leading Jewish diplomats of the present generation.
According to Gilon, Dan preserved and expanded B'nai B'rith's international influence. He developed relationships with leaders, decision-makers and diplomats and helped make the organization a “living bridge” between Israel, Jewish communities and the wider world.
Gilon also highlighted Dan's tireless campaign against antisemitism, his pursuit of historical justice and Holocaust-era property restitution, and his ability to build coalitions and recruit partners for Jewish and Israeli causes.
He expressed confidence that the conclusion of Dan's service as CEO did not represent a withdrawal from public life, but the beginning of a “second chapter.” Dan, he said, would undoubtedly remain involved in diplomatic and public initiatives and continue contributing his experience and wisdom.
Dr. Haim Katz, Chairman of the B'nai B'rith World Center-Jerusalem, began by expressing appreciation for Dan's wife, Michal. He emphasized the warmth, optimism and support she provided throughout Dan's many years of public service, noting that behind every great individual stands an equally remarkable partner.
Katz said that the very fact that the ceremony was taking place at Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the presence of so many ambassadors and diplomatic representatives, testified to Dan's success in defending Israel and the Jewish people and to the international esteem he had earned.
One of Dan's greatest abilities, Katz said, was knowing when to employ quiet and personal diplomacy, drawing upon relationships and trust built over many years, and when it was necessary to speak publicly in a clear and forceful voice. Dan knew how to speak truth to those in positions of power while doing so with responsibility, sound judgment and a deep understanding of the diplomatic arena.
Katz described the sense of personal loss he felt when he learned that Dan would be stepping down as CEO, but noted that Dan's legacy already inspires a younger generation. He recalled Dan's participation in American delegations to international conferences on antisemitism and his involvement, since 2006, in Jewish property restitution negotiations through the World Jewish Restitution Organization.
Katz also highlighted Dan's contribution to Holocaust remembrance and education in Romania, Slovakia, Lithuania and other countries, as well as his support for the World Center's project honoring Jews who rescued fellow Jews during the Holocaust.
He concluded by describing Dan as a voice of experience, wisdom, responsibility and integrity, and expressed confidence that this unique voice would continue to be heard in the years ahead.
Romanian Ambassador to Israel Dr. Radu Ioanid recalled first meeting Dan in 1994 or 1995, while working at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. Since then, the two had worked together in many European countries - sometimes publicly and sometimes behind the scenes.
Ioanid praised Dan's exceptional knowledge and experience in confronting antisemitism and Holocaust denial. He particularly emphasized Dan's ability to recognize not only progress and achievement, but also the moments when countries began retreating from advances made in Holocaust remembrance and the struggle against antisemitism.
The ambassador humorously recalled that Dan once consulted him about whether to accept an award from a particular country. His response was: “Take it - so that you will have something to return if necessary.” The anecdote reflected their long friendship and shared sense of humor, but also the seriousness with which both men viewed the responsibility attached to public honors.
A central part of Ioanid's remarks concerned the International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania, chaired by Elie Wiesel, on which Dan served. Ioanid said that the commission's work brought about a profound change in Romania's approach to its own past and that most of its recommendations had been implemented. Dan, he emphasized, was an important partner in this historic process.
Greek Ambassador to Israel Maya Solomou described Dan's career through imagery drawn from Homer's “Odyssey.” She spoke of a 37-year journey with B'nai B'rith, forming part of more than five decades of service to the Jewish people. Even when “Cyclopes and monsters” appeared along the way, she said, Dan continued his journey with determination and remained focused on reaching Ithaca.
Solomou concentrated on Dan's contribution to relations between the Jewish and Hellenic communities in the United States. She recalled his role in strengthening ties between B'nai B'rith and leading Greek-American organizations, as well as his support for the trilateral partnership among Israel, Greece and Cyprus, together with the United States.
She also highlighted his support for the Israel-Hellenic Forum, joint delegations and an academic course taught in Greece, Israel and Cyprus on diplomatic relations among the three countries. She mentioned B'nai B'rith's longstanding relationship with its historic lodge in Athens and the honor Dan received from AHEPA in 2026.
The ambassador expressed confidence that Dan would continue working to combat antisemitism, protect Jewish communities, strengthen Diaspora partnerships and mentor the next generation. B'nai B'rith, she said, had been an important harbor on his journey - but other harbors still awaited him.
Israel's Ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, sent a recorded message in which he said that Dan's nearly four decades at B'nai B'rith had been characterized by clarity of purpose: strengthening Jewish communities, strengthening Israel and ensuring that Jews could live safely.
Prosor, who had known Dan since his own service in Washington, said that he had witnessed firsthand Dan's passion, integrity and commitment. Dan had defended Israel in the halls of the United Nations and in capitals around the world, confronted antisemitism and transformed Holocaust remembrance from an abstract concept into practical responsibility toward survivors and their families.
He also recalled Dan's role in returning Torah scrolls from Jewish communities destroyed in Lithuania to Israel and to active Jewish communities elsewhere.
Prosor thanked Dan for his friendship, courage and lifetime of dedicated service.
A letter from Ambassador Daniel Meron, Israel's representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva, was read during the ceremony.
Meron expressed profound appreciation for Dan's five decades of defending Israel and the Jewish people. Above all, he summarized Dan's character with one meaningful Yiddish word: “mensch” - a person of integrity, decency and honorable character.
Professor Havatzelet Yahel of the Ben-Gurion Research Institute for the Study of Israel and Zionism at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev presented the new academic partnership between the university and B'nai B'rith International.
She recalled a personal meeting with Dan and Michal at her home, during which they discussed the Jewish people and the State of Israel. In that conversation, she said, she recognized a rare individual who regarded both subjects not merely as fields of professional interest, but as a deeply personal mission.
Yahel described the historic ties between B'nai B'rith, Zionism and the development of the Jewish homeland. She mentioned the Jerusalem Lodge, founded in 1888; the library established by the organization in 1892, which later became a foundation for the National Library of Israel; and the involvement of figures such as Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, David Yellin, Haim Nahman Bialik, Meir Dizengoff and Shimon Rokach.
She also recalled the involvement of B'nai B'rith leaders in diplomatic efforts surrounding the establishment of a Jewish state in 1947-1948 and the organization's role in facilitating the meeting between U.S. President Harry Truman and Chaim Weizmann prior to American recognition of Israel.
Turning to current events, Yahel said that since October 7, much of the pressure directed against Israel had moved onto university campuses and into lecture halls. Combating antisemitism and the delegitimization of Israel, she argued, requires the integration of diplomatic and public activity with accurate and disciplined academic research.
Dan had always believed that effective advocacy must be based on facts, she said, while research institutes can provide the knowledge, intellectual discipline and practical tools required for that purpose. Research must reach not only academic journals, but also policymakers, educators, teachers and those responsible for conditions on university campuses.
Yahel announced that, as a result of the sustained efforts of Dr. Ilan Shchori, a permanent academic partnership had been established among B'nai B'rith International, the Ben-Gurion Research Institute for the Study of Israel and Zionism and the Daniel S. Mariaschin Institute for Leadership and Public Policy.
The first joint academic conference will be held in December 2026 at Ben-Gurion University's Sde Boker Campus. It will examine the activities of Jewish organizations in Israel and around the world during times of crisis, as well as antisemitism, anti-Zionism, the delegitimization of Israel and the indigenous roots of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel.
Professor Yahel thanked Dan for devoting his life to the Jewish people and the State of Israel and expressed the university's pride in accompanying him into the next chapter of his public work.
Dr. Ilan Shchori, Senior Vice President of B'nai B'rith International and the initiator and organizer of the ceremony, devoted his remarks to the special personal relationship that had developed between him and Dan over the previous decade.
Shchori recalled that the two met through their work with B'nai B'rith International and that over the years their relationship grew into one based on trust, mutual respect and a shared love for B'nai B'rith, the Jewish people and the State of Israel.
Through Dan, Shchori also came to know Michal and her family's special story. Their connection gained an additional personal dimension when it emerged that Michal's sister was married to Professor Robert Rockaway, one of Shchori's favorite lecturers during his studies at Tel Aviv University and an important scholar of American Jewish history.
Shchori described the many conversations he and Dan had conducted over the years about B'nai B'rith, Israel, the Jewish world and the challenges confronting Jewish communities. These discussions, he said, repeatedly revealed Dan's vast experience, diplomatic wisdom, dedication and profound sense of mission.
Dan Mariaschin, Shchori emphasized, is important not only to B'nai B'rith International, but also to Jewish communities around the world and to the State of Israel. Throughout his many years of service, he embodied the values of brotherhood, unity, justice, shared responsibility and respect for human dignity.
In the course of his work, Dan met presidents, prime ministers, foreign ministers, ambassadors and diplomats. Yet, as Shchori emphasized, the respect accorded to him around the world did not result only from the senior position he held. It arose first and foremost from his character, his integrity and the quality of his leadership.
Shchori highlighted Dan's major contribution to the fight against antisemitism, the defense of human rights and Jewish communities, the strengthening of Israel's international relationships and the preservation of B'nai B'rith's position as a leading and influential Jewish voice in the international arena.
Alongside Dan's diplomatic and public achievements, Shchori emphasized that his greatness could also be measured by the way he treated people - with respect, patience, warmth, humility and a genuine willingness to listen. In addition to being an international Jewish leader, Dan was and remained an approachable friend, a loyal partner and a person who could be trusted.
Shchori expressed pride and deep emotion at having had the privilege of initiating and organizing the ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - the most appropriate place to honor a man who had devoted his life to strengthening Israel's international standing and defending the Jewish people.
He concluded with a sentence that captured the spirit of the entire evening:
“An official position may come to an end, but a true mission never ends.”
Shchori also thanked Michal Mariaschin for the many years during which she stood beside Dan, supported him and enabled him to give so much to B'nai B'rith, the Jewish people and the State of Israel.
Director General of Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Eden Bar Tal delivered the keynote address.
At the beginning of his remarks, he praised B'nai B'rith as a respected international organization with more than 100,000 members in dozens of countries, committed to the Jewish people, Israel, human dignity, justice and tolerance.
He noted that Dan had devoted nearly five decades to serving the Jewish people, including 27 years as CEO of B'nai B'rith International. During this period, he became a trusted contact for leaders and decision-makers around the world. His strategic relationships benefited Jewish communities and Israel, and he became a close partner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on numerous issues, including U.S.-Israel relations, Latin America, the Israel-Greece-Cyprus partnership, Jewish property restitution and activity in the international arena.
Bar Tal then addressed the condition of the Western world and the challenges confronting Israel and the Jewish people. The world, he said, was living through a period of historic significance, marked by a broad struggle against Western civilization. He warned of increasing radicalization, political polarization and the weakening of the political center in Europe, as well as an emerging alliance between the radical left and radical Islam.
Antisemitism and the campaign against Israel, he argued, are not isolated phenomena, but part of a wider assault on the West. He pointed to systematic investments in academia, culture, the media and political systems aimed at influencing public opinion and spreading misinformation about Israel and the Jewish people.
Bar Tal said that the Jewish people were experiencing one of their most challenging periods since the 1930s and 1940s. He urged his listeners to look “through the window and not only into the mirror” - to examine reality as it is, rather than as they would prefer it to be.
He criticized European countries considering boycotts, sanctions and restrictions against Israel while it was fighting Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis. True friendship, he said, must be demonstrated during wartime.
At the same time, he stressed that Israel is not alone. It is developing new partnerships in the Far East, India, the Gulf states, Greece, Cyprus, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Israel's capabilities in defense, technology, artificial intelligence, energy, research and development make it an important strategic asset for its partners.
Bar Tal also spoke personally about his twins, a son and a daughter, who had served in Gaza. He described the difficulty of a parent whose children go out to defend him, but emphasized that Israel would never surrender its right or its ability to defend itself.
He called for a strategic transformation in Israel's international relations: a move from dependence to partnerships based on assets and mutual value, from limited cooperation to deeper alliances, and from a primarily local outlook to a broad global strategy.
Bar Tal concluded by calling for Jewish unity, pride, vigilance and mutual assistance, and thanked B'nai B'rith and Dan for their decades of dedicated work.
Dan began his remarks with visible emotion, saying that he felt at home in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building. He thanked Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, Director General Eden Bar Tal, Ministry officials, the speakers and all those in attendance.
He expressed special gratitude to Dr. Ilan Shchori for initiating and organizing the ceremony and to Alan Schneider, Director of the B'nai B'rith World Center-Jerusalem, with whom he had worked closely for 37 years.
He also thanked B'nai B'rith Honorary President Richard Heideman, the diplomats present, his colleagues, friends and family members.
Dan recalled that his two sisters, Sandra and Cynthia, had been raised on Zionism around the family dinner table and had “taken it literally” by making aliyah to Israel.
He devoted particularly moving words to his wife, Michal, noting that they would celebrate 50 years of marriage in December. With humor, he described their marriage as a Jewish meeting between the son of an Ashkenazi family and the daughter of a Bukharan-Baghdadi family, who was born in Mumbai and came to Israel at the age of four. Nothing he had achieved, he said, would have been possible without her love, advice and support.
Dan then reviewed the course of his professional career. He began in 1973 at a Jewish community relations council and later worked at the American Zionist Federation in Boston. He recalled his early relationships with Israeli diplomats, including Colette Avital, and events he organized to mark the tenth anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem.
In 1977, he moved to New York and joined the Anti-Defamation League. He spoke of his contacts with Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Chaim Herzog, and with many other Israeli diplomats.
In 1986, he moved to Washington and worked at AIPAC. He later served as a spokesman for former Secretary of State Alexander Haig's presidential campaign, an experience he described as a practical year of study in modern American foreign affairs.
Dan joined B'nai B'rith in 1988. Since then, he worked with every Israeli ambassador in Washington, beginning with Meir Rosenne, and addressed a wide range of issues: U.S.-Israel relations, anti-Israel bias at the United Nations, Soviet, Syrian and Ethiopian Jewry, terrorism, wars and ceasefires, the policies of American administrations and Congress, the fall of communism and the Soviet Union, the Abraham Accords, the BDS movement and the global fight against antisemitism.
Dan devoted a significant part of his remarks to his family's Zionist roots. He spoke about his mother, Rose, and relatives from her family who left Lithuania for Mandatory Palestine in 1934. A photograph of the family in the Land of Israel was displayed with pride in his childhood home, and his mother would read aloud the letters they sent.
He also spoke about the heavy price paid by the family: a relative who fell on the Golan Heights during the Yom Kippur War; Shlomo, who was killed in a military plane crash in Sinai; and Sagui Dekel-Chen of Kibbutz Nir Oz, who was abducted on October 7 and held hostage by Hamas for 498 days.
His father, Saul, emigrated from Czarist Russia. A portrait of Theodor Herzl hung in the family home. Before leaving in 1913, his father said farewell to a friend, and the two promised that they would meet again in the Land of Israel. This story, Dan said, instilled in him from childhood a powerful attraction to the idea of Jewish national liberation.
Dan reviewed B'nai B'rith's place in the history of Zionism and Israel. He referred to the founding of the Jerusalem Lodge in 1888, the involvement of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, David Yellin, Haim Nahman Bialik, Meir Dizengoff and Shimon Rokach, and the library founded by the organization that eventually contributed to the development of the National Library of Israel.
He recalled that Chaim Weizmann served as Vice President of the B'nai B'rith Lodge in Manchester and worked to promote the Balfour Declaration. He also noted B'nai B'rith's role in facilitating the meeting between President Harry Truman and Chaim Weizmann that contributed to American recognition of Israel, as well as the contribution of former B'nai B'rith President Philip Klutznick to the development of modern Ashdod.
Dan described the members of Israel's diplomatic service as professional partners, teachers, guides, friends and allies in the struggle to secure Israel's rightful place in a world that had often displayed hostility or indifference toward it.
Toward the conclusion of his remarks, Dan warned that the Jewish world was facing not merely a “perfect storm,” but a “tsunami of hate.”
Antisemitic images and accusations once considered unacceptable had become increasingly normalized, he said, while social media had become a factory operating around the clock to spread misinformation, lies and blood libels.
He criticized universities that had abandoned their Jewish students and politicians willing to tolerate incitement in order to preserve their own power. In response to this reality, he called for the cultivation of allies, the development of practical solutions and, above all, the restoration of unity and consensus within the Jewish world.
If Jewish communities are weak and divided internally, he warned, they will find it difficult to confront external threats.
Dan concluded by expressing his profound gratitude to all those present, saying that he would remain eternally grateful for their tribute, friendship and partnership.
Following Dan's remarks, Alan Schneider read a letter from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Prime Minister wrote that, after many years of friendship, he was pleased to join in honoring Dan's extraordinary record of service. Over nearly four decades at B'nai B'rith, including 27 years as CEO, Dan brought the concerns of the Jewish people into presidential palaces, foreign ministries and centers of decision-making throughout the world.
Netanyahu noted that Dan had met heads of state and government, foreign ministers and three popes. He described him as a respected and steadfast voice who had fought antisemitism, defended Israel against discrimination in international institutions and strengthened its relations with its friends.
The Prime Minister emphasized that, even after completing his term, Dan's commitment would remain undiminished in his new role as CEO Emeritus and Senior Advisor.
Prime Minister Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, wished Dan health, happiness and fulfillment in the next chapter of his life.
At the conclusion of the evening, emcee Leader Grava-Lezi thanked the team responsible for preparing and producing the ceremony, led by Dr. Ilan Shchori, who initiated and organized the event, and Alan Schneider, Director of the B'nai B'rith World Center-Jerusalem.
Thanks were also extended to Eti Freda, Andrea Cure, Natalie Don, Mordechai Gordon and the staff members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and B'nai B'rith who assisted with the organizational, professional and technical aspects of the event.
Special appreciation was expressed to singer Hila Ben-David and musician Shay Barak for a musical program that brought an intimate and emotional dimension to the evening.
Dr. Shchori thanked Leader Grava-Lezi for emceeing the ceremony with professionalism, warmth and grace, and thanked all the partners who helped turn the initiative into an impressive and moving international occasion.
Following the singing of “Hatikvah,” the guests were invited to continue their conversations over dessert in the Ministry's atrium.
The speeches delivered throughout the evening portrayed Dan Mariaschin as one of the most prominent representatives of Jewish diplomacy in recent decades. His influence arose from a rare combination of historical and diplomatic knowledge, international relationships, personal integrity, moderation, courage and the ability to speak truth to decision-makers.
His contribution extended far beyond his leadership of B'nai B'rith. It encompassed the strengthening of Israel, the fight against antisemitism, the restitution of Jewish property, the preservation of Holocaust memory, the protection of Jewish communities and the creation of lasting relationships with governments and diplomats around the world.
Alongside his diplomatic accomplishments, nearly every speaker emphasized his humanity, modesty, warmth and respectful treatment of every individual. Michal Mariaschin was recognized as an essential partner in his life and as the person whose support made his many years of international service possible.
The conclusion of his term was not viewed as the end of his mission, but as the opening of a new chapter in which he will continue to advise, write, teach, mentor and contribute to the next generation.
The new academic partnership with Ben-Gurion University and the institute bearing Dan's name will also give his continuing mission an important institutional and scholarly dimension.
The ceremony took place against the background of a sharp rise in antisemitism and hostility toward Israel. Dan's legacy was therefore presented not merely as a record of past achievement, but also as a source of inspiration and direction for the work that lies ahead.
More than anything else, the exceptional presence of ambassadors and diplomatic representatives from nearly 40 countries demonstrated that Dan Mariaschin's work has crossed national, continental and cultural boundaries. It was a broad international expression of appreciation for a man who, over many decades, built trust, bridged differences and brought together leaders and nations in support of Israel and the Jewish people.
The ceremony concluded with a clear understanding: Daniel S. Mariaschin's term as CEO of B'nai B'rith International may have come to an end, but his public service and his mission on behalf of Israel and the Jewish people are far from over. His legacy, experience, international relationships and profound commitment will continue to guide B'nai B'rith International and its work around the world for many years to come.
